Face to Face: Kim Kardashian's Celebrity Business
Whether it’s a sister’s wedding, a sister’s pregnancy, or her own on-again-off-again relationship with NFL superstar Reggie Bush, Kim Kardashian’s every move makes real-time celebrity news – and the tabloids absolutely love the reality star as a cover girl.
She arrived for her interview with ForbesWoman publisher Moira Forbes late, but still earlier than the paparazzi – so she and her entourage waited outside Forbes offices in their big black SUV until the photographers descended upon Fifth Avenue. Only then did Kardashian emerge, and she looked picture perfect in her green form-fitting dress.
But Kardashian knows that she can't rely on her stardom forever-- and she's preparing herself for a time when her 15 minutes of fame has expired. She's selling diet supplements, creating perfume, designing clothes, hosting parties... In the last week alone, Kardashian has been to New York, Miami and Spain and she's jet-setting off to Australia next week to shill cell phones.
She might star in an E! reality television show, but that's not her brand anymore. She clearly wants to be taken seriously as an entrepreneur. (How do I know this? Her Twitter bio lists "business woman" as her first description.)

One can’t help but wonder what all this teaches young girls about building their own empires. Is it perfectly fine to launch your career ensconced in NSFW infamy? Or that "creating a fragrance" can be your career ambition?
Clearly, I have mixed feelings about Kardashian. Popular culture is bursting at the seams with people who are famous for being famous, and we’ve just helped to lend credence to the scourge of the reality show set.
But I have to admire her business savvy. She's taken what she was dealt and made a lucrative living out of it. I do give her credit for not making a name of herself for being a hard-partying, sports-car crashing, fall-into-the-bushes child star turned wayward adult. Yes, she had a sex tape. But instead of crying about it, she jumped on the notoriety which, in turn, led to reality television and fame.
Kardashian also seems to understand that her fan base is the one buying her products. She really does treat her fans well. On Twitter, she's constantly tweeting answers to their questions (even if they're really lame: "Do you enjoy being a model with a big ass? LOL" Answer: Yes.) And while I walked her out of our building, she spent several minutes taking photos with various security guards, mail staff and maintenance workers, patiently waiting when their cell phone cameras malfunctioned.
As Kardashian left the building, the cameras flashed and paparazzi shouted for her to look their way. She waved a well-manicured hand at them and climbed into her vehicle as a driver held her door.
I can be as cynical as I want about Kim Kardashian the business woman, but she's the one making bank.
